Note: This is about to be the caption of an Instagram post commemorating, but I realized it could double as a quick post! It’s not the most cohesive (that’s becoming a trend with these, isn’t it?), but I wanted to post it on the actual anniversary! While officially I started private practice in October 2025, it was November 5th, 2025, that my PLLC was approved by the state.
Today marks one year since NC SOS approved the PLLC application for Moonrise Pathways!!
I wish I could say the founding of Moonrise Pathways was well thought out, planned, and executed, but I was largely winging my launch into private practice! [With a lot of support and resources, though!]
That said, I am so very proud to look back on Moonrise’s 1st anniversary.
I decided authenticity needed to be at the forefront—as you can see, I let my love of the moon, the color purple, Shrek, and (bonus thoughts) be front and center on my website. (“Professionalism” and typical styles be damned).
And while there may have been a scramble to get the ball rolling, I did spend a lot of time thinking about what I wanted the foundation of Moonrise to be, now that I only had to report to me, myself, and I (and licensure boards, social work standards, etc., etc.). I was making my way through Decolonizing Therapy by Jennifer Mullen at the same time, and I largely credit it for my work being recentered around liberation-focused, anti-oppression, systems-informed principles. I’ve always considered social justice at the root of what I do, but reading this book really shifted things to another level. The many other books that follow/ed, plus connecting with other liberation/anti oppressive therapists, have only helped that further strengthen and grow. So, as I laid out in my purpose statement, Moonrise is “trauma-responsive, anti-carceral, and fundamentally supportive of autonomy and self-determination.”
Having a practice that feels so very aligned with my values—with transparency about where it’s not 100%—a game changer!
Not only has it helped me grow as a therapist, but it has also laid great groundwork for my start as a clinical supervisor. Though, of course, the (un)learning and growing is never really done!
Quick Year Recap:
725* sessions held, and my schedule/caseload has been near-full (with moments of being full/closed) pretty consistently for a few months now
Expanded to 3 additional states, with 1 more pending
Started providing clinical supervision to LCSWAs
Started co-hosting a peer consult group
And there’s been plenty of networking and other consultations!
Can’t wait to see what year two holds!!!
If anyone who calls/called me their therapist is reading this, especially those who were patient and understanding during this bumpy start of Moonrise, I appreciate you. I don’t take the honor and privilege of walking alongside you on your therapy path lightly; thank you for trusting me to do so.
*If recapping the full 13ish months, it would be 764. And if you’re curious, these numbers include intakes and therapy sessions regardless of length, though the majority were 53+. Sorry, not sorry, insurance companies!
